Sonic 2 Speeds Through the Box Office
By Yung Namahage • 1 year ago

Some people thought there was no way Sonic 2 could recapture what made the first arguably the best video game-based movie yet. Those people were wrong, seeing as reception to the sequel has been mostly warm so far. It currently sits at 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the first movie's 63%.

Everything that made the first movie great is also present here: Sonic's buddy cop relationship with Tom, shout-outs to the fandom and games, Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey, and generally fun if not entirely original action scenes. Of course, it's not just Tom that Sonic hangs around with; his banter with Tails is reminiscent of something out of Sonic Heroes, and Knuckles is excellent as an antagonist for the most part.

Another sign of its success is the box office. During its opening weekend it managed to score US$72,105,176 and it's still going strong. For reference its budget was $90,000,000, and right now it's made $119,612,388 in the US alone. It also ends with a tease for the already confirmed Sonic 3, which I won't spoil here but I will say I totally called it, and I'm psyched to see how it unfolds.
